A new trend that has been going on is limiting or making it impossible for administrators to download and test software. Not only do you need to make an account, and log on, often several download files are not present anymore, or simply locked because not authorised. Sometimes it looks like you need to buy the software before you can even try it. I don’t think that is how Trial software is supposed to work.

Citrix and VMware excel in this needingless effort to prevent adminstrators to set up their own labs at home. It should seriously be the other way around: provide Certified administrators with online labs accessible worldwide.

Since some files are several GBs. You can use the standard Akamai download manager (java) which is presented to you, but on networks that are not so stable the resume function does not seem to work as it should, and your download suddenly stops. (Update Nov 2014: Citrix seems to have disabled the Akamai download manager for some downloads)
What worked nicely for me is to use Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm). A spyware free tool which I am using for years now, and does what it is supposed to do. You can even add mirrors, to improve the download speed. Just add the same URL as mirror. This works since the downloadservers are redundantly configured for multiple hundreds of users/downloads at the same time.
Free download manager works perfectly to download these large files, most with resume mode enabled.
The download manager can download the file in multiple threads, which speeds up your download drastically. It depends on the server is multiple threads and resume support is enabled. In this case it is.
Now add the same URL as multiple mirror sites to speed up downloading.
The same URL is used to add more mirror servers.
Free download manager starts several threads to the ISO file.
And there we go: Resume support and threaded download at a very decent speed: 1,2 MB per second. Hurray!
Note: Sometimes you need to stop the download and restart it to get the full thread download starting.
If Citrix has modified their backend links so that it’s not working anymore, … don’t shoot the messenger 🙂
